The light just shows you where the ignition timing is at. The timing light, when hooked up, shines a light every time it feels an ignition pulse in cylinder 1 and that light is then shown onto the marks in the crank pulley, but the actual adjustment is made by rotating the distributor. I then tried to twist the distributor to get it to 10 degrees BTDC but. Started the engine and pulled the trigger on the timing light, and the timing was apparently way off because the pointer didnt align itself with any of the markings on the flywheel. If not, then loosen the bolts on the distributor and pivot it left/right to adjust ignition advance/retard until the red mark lines up. Also marked 10 degrees BTDC on the flywheel and set the timing light to 0 degrees advance. So with your timing light set to 0°, it should show the RED mark in line with that plastic line. In the picture above, the lone white mark marks tdc when it's in line with the plastic line right above it. The one I got has a dial where you can adjust the advance. When the light shines on the zero degrees advance you have reached your preset timing limit that in effect you have dialed it back to zero degrees. If not, then loosen the bolts on the distributor and pivot it left/right to adjust ignition advance/retard until the red mark lines up. A dial back light allows you to pre-set your total mechanical advance and after disconnecting the vacuum advance shoot the light at the timing mark. Top dead center is when piston#1 is at the very top of it's rotation. If your pulley or indicator is marked with degree settings, turn the crankshaft until the single mark and the appropriate degree mark line up. There pretty simple, three leads, point at the flywheel, find the marker, youre good to go Theres a few finer points that needle that the markers on is adjustable. So hopefully this gives you an idea how that works. Ok, so what it means is that with your ignition light dial set to 0 degrees, you adjust the distributor timing so that the timing light reads ignition pulse as 16° behind top dead center (tdc). So, I think in this case well consider it a video on how to use a timing light and how to check your idle timing on the outboard. ![]()
